The saying what goes around, comes around, is played out so profoundly in this story that it is almost shocking! When roles are reversed and it is the kids turn to be compassionate, and loving, as in the case of a parent struggling with Alzheimer’s or dying, many kids forget the patient devotion their parents had practiced with them. We are all supposed to pay that love forward!
The Bible is very clear and tells us about how we are to treat our parents for OUR OWN sake! We are to honor, respect and take care of them especially when they are old, and vulnerable. We are definitely NOT to euthanize them because they are no longer of use to us, or are a burden. That is not progressive, it is barbaric.
Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you. 13 You shall not kill.(1)
This father even in his struggling state teaches his son the valuable lesson of unconditional love, family loyalty, and to, “JUST LOVE ME THROUGH THIS.”
