When Amy and Ben Wright from, Wilmington, North Carolina, were told their son, Beau had Down Syndrome they struggled at first. Like many parent’s initial reaction they were a little worried, and that’s a normal reaction when we’re dealing with the unknown. However once they just accepted him for the way he was created, and decided to just love him, like they would any other child they felt relieved and at peace. They were able to experience the awesome blessing’s that kids with special needs bring to their families.
When Amy and Ben saw that there are barriers in society for people with special needs, they decided to open, “Bitty and Beau’s Coffee.” It’s a positive place that provide’s socializing, educates people, and brings them together with special needs people. At Bitty and Beau’s people get to know each other in a fun and informal atmosphere. The idea is advocacy at its best, and it has worked wonderfully! Amy has witnessed walls coming down, as mind’s and hearts change, and begin to open up. People are having great experiences at the coffee shop, and its thriving. In the last year it has gone from a 500 square feet location to a 5000 one. They’re proving people with special needs are perfectly capable of being productive members of society, just like anyone else. Also that it is up to our society to create the opportunities and accommodations needed to help them to reach their goals, and Bitty and Beau’s place does just that. Hopefully we will see lots more Bitty and Beau’s Coffee shops everywhere in the future. Congratulations on your success goes out to the, Wright family and all the employees at Bitty and Beau’s Coffee.
