Eight week old baby Aria was born deaf, as well as her mom and grandmother. In this video her grandmother is teaching her sign language, and this sweet baby girl is absorbing it. We also absolutely love this for a few reasons.
Experts and parents say teaching babies sign language actually cuts down on frustration and tantrums. Signing actually gives the baby a non verbal way to communicate what they want or if something is wrong.
That reminded us of the story of how sign language actually helped a baby save her own life. Sandy Knibbs, and her baby girl, Georgia had been taking sign language, and little did Sandy know it would soon save her baby’s life. Sandy gave her daughter, Georgia an almond butter sandwich, and shortly after the baby started making the sign for, “hurt.” Sandy could see Georgia’s lips and hand were beginning to blister from the allergic reaction to the almond butter, so she immediately gave her the appropriate allergy medication and rushed her to the doctor.
It’s amazing how quickly babies learn sign language. 13 month old Ben is adorably showing off his sign language and verbal skills in this video. We encourage parent’s to watch a few instructional videos online or take a class with their child. It can be a very rewarding, fun learning experience for both parent and child, and we love the idea it can help babies stay safe.
