After what she felt was a rather quick labor and delivery of her second child, Oakley became concerned when a nurse felt there was a possibility the baby had Down Syndrome. Oakley didn’t believe them at first but her fears were confirmed when her husband returned with the diagnosis the doctor had given him.
The normal reaction in this situation for a parent is shock and fear. Fear of what it means for their child’s health, future, and family, and the possible limitations the child may have, as well as stigmatization. Fear, social pressure to abort, and lack of knowledge, is also what is causing the alarming extermination of babies with Down Syndrome world wide! It is a big factor behind the 67% abortion rate in the U.S, and the shocking 98% in Europe of these babies. It’s an appalling rate and it doesn’t have to be that way. People with Down Syndrome with help, are capable of learning to live pretty normal and productive lives. They actually enrich our lives with their candid, honest, and loving ways, as you can see in Oakley’s video. We hope this sad trend stops. These little angels are a gift from God, made in His image, and likeness, they deserve the same dignity and respect every other human is entitled to.
Listening to Oakley’s journey with her baby was heartwarming. You can see once they embraced and accepted him just the way he is, love totally conquers all their fears and worries! What seemed to be sad at first, turns out to be incredibly beautiful after all. We hope more people see the beauty in these babies and learn more about how precious they are. Please share this and help change minds, and hearts. We wish you a wonderfully blessed day!
