You could be sleeping on a pillow full of bug poop! If you knew up to 1/3 of your pillow’s weight was contaminated with bugs and their feces how quickly would you throw it out ? Many items that we use around our homes everyday are infested with germs and bacteria. Below is a video explaining some of the items that you may want to throw away after the recommended amount of time, as they have a real potential to be harmful to you, and your families health.
1. Toothbrushes
The average human can have up to 1 billion bacteria growing on a single tooth, therefore it’s not surprising that your toothbrush can be a breeding ground for these bacteria. To greatly reduce them rinse your tooth brush thoroughly after each use, and allow it to completely air dry in an upright position, replace every 3-4 months.
2. Pillows
Up to 1/3 of the actual weight of your pillow can be made up of bugs, dead skin, dust mites and their feces. These can even cause respiratory infections and other health problems. Therefore make sure you replace your pillows once every 3 years, and machine wash every 1-3 months.
3. Loofah’s
Because of their nooks and crannies they are a great place for bacteria to collect, get rid of them every 3 weeks.
4. Contact Lenses
A surprising 40% of people wear their contacts past their acceptable due date risking serious eye infection. 80% of the storage cases have shown to be contaminated with bacteria. Get rid of them every 3 months.
5. Make Up
A whole host of bacteria and germs can grow on your make up which can cause serious health risks. Get rid of lipstick every 2 years, nail polish and eye shadow every 12 months, mascara, and eye liner every 3 months, and blush every 18 months.
6. Teflon Pans
Get rid of them immediately when scratched Teflon chips can get in your food.
7. Dish Washing Sponges
Sponges are one of the worst places for germs in the kitchen. Get rid of them once a month before they smell. Another quick solution is to microwave a damp sponge for a couple minutes which will kill up to 99% of that harmful bacteria, but make sure they don’t have metal on them.
